The Bows Studios

The Bows (formerly Untitled Art Society) was founded in 1994 in Mohkínstsis (Calgary, Alberta), Treaty 7 Territory, by a group of recent graduates of the Alberta College of Art + Design (now Alberta University of the Arts); these young artists created a studio collective as a means to continue to support each other, and their surrounding community, in the challenging environs outside of the structures of post-secondary arts education.

Today, being part of The Bows studios allows artists to gain access to affordable space in the Beltline, networking and exhibition opportunities, studio visits with curators, and all of the discursive and artistic initiatives that constitute The Bows programming.

The Bows studio members pay rent based on the square footage of their studio space. Rent includes all utilities and access to common spaces. Studios are private and accessible 24 hours/day with no holiday closures. There is a large freight elevator to assist studio members in bringing large items into the space and a loading dock at the back of the building. Please note that individual studios are only accessible by a normal sized doorway.

The Bows is a non-toxic environment. Oil paint is permitted with low-fume solvents or linseed oil. No materials that emit toxic fumes are permitted in the studios, any spraying can be done on the loading dock.

We are committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and supportive environment for all artists, visitors, staff, and community members. The Bows Community Code of Conduct outlines our shared values and expectations, helping ensure that our spaces remain safe, welcoming, and accountable. We invite everyone engaging with The Bows to read and uphold the agreement as part of our collective care for one another.
