Most of Caroline’s pieces begin with a single image she wants to draw, developing organically from that starting point rather than from a predetermined overall meaning. For Ascension, she began with the word itself, thinking about ideas of birth and rebirth, and followed with iconography that evoked the new year. Much of her process is instinctual. She is interested in how people follow systems such as astrology, the Lunar New Year, or religion. While she finds it a little funny to let such frameworks shape life events, she is also reminded that it is everyone’s first time on earth, and that guidance from the universe can be meaningful. She often finds it difficult to describe her work, as it tends to emerge as a collection of elements her mind assembles without a clear rationale. She hopes that viewers who are drawn to the work will find their own sense of meaning within it.
